The programme was organised by the District Child Welfare and Protection Committee (DCWPC), Hnahthial, with the objective of raising awareness among church leaders about child protection issues, legal safeguards available to children, and the responsibilities of community institutions in preventing abuse and neglect.

The event brought together church leaders from different denominations, government officials, and child welfare professionals to discuss ways of strengthening child protection mechanisms at the grassroots level. Organisers said the programme was intended to equip church leaders with the knowledge and awareness needed to identify child protection concerns and respond appropriately when such cases arise.

The programme was inaugurated by Pi K. Vanlalruati, while Pi F. Lalnuntluangi, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), conducted the proceedings. During the discussions, speakers highlighted the growing need to reinforce child protection systems in the face of changing social realities and emerging challenges affecting children and families.

Addressing the gathering, officials emphasized that churches play a vital role not only as places of worship but also as centres of moral guidance, education, and community support. They noted that church leaders often serve as trusted figures within society and are therefore uniquely positioned to promote child safety, raise awareness, and support vulnerable children and families.

Speakers stressed that protecting children is a collective responsibility requiring cooperation among government agencies, educational institutions, religious organisations, and community members. They encouraged church leaders to actively participate in creating safe environments where children can grow, learn, and thrive without fear of abuse, exploitation, or neglect.

The programme also focused on legal frameworks designed to protect children. Participants were briefed on key provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Officials explained the rights of children under these laws and outlined the procedures for reporting and responding to cases involving abuse or exploitation.

Participants were urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspected incidents of child abuse, misconduct, or exploitation to the appropriate authorities without delay. Officials emphasized that early reporting and timely intervention are crucial in ensuring the safety and welfare of affected children.

Earlier in the programme, Dr. R. Lalrinhlua, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), delivered the welcome address and highlighted the importance of community participation in child protection efforts. The vote of thanks was delivered by Lalvenhima Khawlhring, Supervisor of the Child Helpline Unit, who expressed appreciation to the participants and organisers for their commitment to the cause.

The inaugural session was followed by a technical session that provided detailed information on child protection measures, reporting mechanisms, and community awareness initiatives. Experts shared practical guidance on identifying warning signs of abuse and supporting children in need of protection.

Officials expressed hope that the programme would strengthen collaboration between churches and child welfare agencies in Hnahthial district. They noted that increasing awareness among community leaders is an important step toward building a safer environment for children and ensuring that their rights and well-being are protected at all levels of society.
