Arunachal Weightlifter Charu Pesi Wins Three Gold Medals at Universal Weightlifting Cup in Samoa

Itanagar, April 28, 2026: Charu Pesi, a rising weightlifting star from Arunachal Pradesh, brought pride to India by winning three gold medals at the IBFC Universal Weightlifting Cup held in Apia, Samoa, from April 25 to 30.

Competing in the men’s 65 kg category, Pesi delivered an impressive performance to claim gold in all three segments - snatch, clean and jerk, and overall total. He lifted 127 kg in the snatch and 162 kg in the clean and jerk to secure the top position at the international event.

Pesi, a native of Chambang village in Kra Daadi district, was the lone participant from Arunachal Pradesh at the competition. His victory marks a significant milestone for the state in international weightlifting.

The young athlete had earlier won a silver medal at the Senior National Weightlifting Championship, which helped him earn a place to represent India at the international level.

Pesi is also a beneficiary of the Chief Minister’s Athlete Coaching and Empowerment Scheme (CM ACES), a programme launched to nurture sporting talent in the state.

Congratulating the athlete, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said Pesi’s remarkable performance reflects the dedication and discipline of young athletes from the state and wished him continued success on the global stage.

Sports enthusiasts and officials across Arunachal Pradesh have hailed the achievement as a proud moment for the state and a sign of the growing potential of its athletes in international competitions.
