Aizawl, April 28, 2026: The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) has appointed Lalmuanpuia Punte, MLA representing the Hrangturzo Assembly Constituency, as one of the party’s Vice Presidents, strengthening its leadership structure following recent developments within the party organization.

The appointment comes in the wake of the resignation tendered by W. Chhuanawma, MLA from Tuichang Constituency, who stepped down from his position as the party’s elected Vice President citing health-related concerns. According to party sources, Chhuanawma submitted his resignation letter to the party leadership on April 22, 2026.
However, despite receiving the resignation, the ZPM headquarters executive committee reportedly did not formally accept his request to relinquish the post. Party leaders stated that discussions were held regarding the leadership situation and the need to ensure continuity in the party’s organizational structure.
Following deliberations within the party’s headquarters executive, it was decided that another Vice President should be appointed to fill the vacancy and strengthen the party’s leadership team. As a result, Lalmuanpuia Punte was selected for the position.
Punte, who currently serves as the MLA for Hrangturzo, is also a member of the ZPM Political Affairs Committee (PAC), one of the party’s key decision-making bodies. Party insiders indicated that his name had been considered for the Vice President’s post from the outset and that he was viewed as a suitable candidate due to his experience, leadership qualities, and involvement in party affairs.
According to party leaders, the decision was reached after consultations and discussions among members of the ZPM executive. The appointment is expected to enhance organizational coordination and strengthen the party’s internal leadership as it continues to expand its political activities and governance responsibilities.
The Zoram People's Movement, which currently leads the state government, has been focusing on consolidating its organizational structure alongside its administrative responsibilities. Party officials noted that maintaining a strong leadership framework is essential to ensuring smooth communication between the government, elected representatives, and the party organization.
Although W. Chhuanawma’s resignation has not been officially accepted, party leaders acknowledged that his health concerns prompted the need to review the leadership arrangement. They emphasized that the appointment of Lalmuanpuia Punte should not be viewed as a replacement resulting from disciplinary or political issues but rather as a practical step aimed at reinforcing the party’s leadership capacity.
Party sources further clarified that Chhuanawma continues to hold his position as the party’s only elected Vice President, since his resignation remains pending and has not been formally approved by the executive committee. The party’s leadership structure also includes two appointed Vice Presidents, VL Zaithanzama and C. Lalnunnema.

With Punte’s induction into the leadership team, the party now has an expanded group of senior office-bearers tasked with supporting organizational management, policy discussions, and political outreach activities.
Political observers noted that the move reflects ZPM’s effort to maintain stability within its organizational framework while ensuring that responsibilities are effectively distributed among experienced leaders. As a member of the Political Affairs Committee and a sitting legislator, Punte is expected to play a more prominent role in party affairs in the coming months.
Party officials expressed confidence that the new appointment will contribute positively to the functioning of the organization and help strengthen coordination between the party leadership and its grassroots structures across Mizoram.
