15 Arrested in Murder of PwD Man in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills

Williamnagar, April 15: Meghalaya Police have arrested 15 of the 16 accused named in the brutal killing of a Person with Disabilities (PwD) in Songsak area of East Garo Hills District, officials confirmed on Wednesday. One accused remains absconding as search operations continue.

The incident occurred on April 8 at Dagal Nachikol village under the Songsak area. According to an FIR lodged by the victim’s family at Williamnagar Police Station on April 9, a group of around 16 individuals allegedly forced their way into the house of Talseng and assaulted him.

The victim, who reportedly had a history of mental health issues, was severely beaten during the attack. His wife, Merolin M. Sangma, and his elderly father, Japansing M. Marak, who tried to intervene, were also assaulted and sustained serious injuries.

Talseng was first taken to the Songsak Primary Health Centre for treatment and later referred to Williamnagar Civil Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. However, he succumbed to his injuries before reaching the hospital.

The FIR named 13 residents from Dagal Nachikol village and three from nearby Nangapa village as the accused in the case.

Family members of the victim expressed shock and anger over the incident, stating that Talseng was known in the village for his mental health condition and had previously sought treatment from various institutions.

Police said investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
