Gangtok, March 2, 2026: My Bharat, Gangtok, in collaboration with The ICFAI University Sikkim, successfully organised the Viksit Bharat District Level Youth Parliament at the university campus on Monday, providing a platform for young people to engage in meaningful discussions on democracy, governance, and constitutional values. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from 52 registered youth participants representing Gangtok district.

The event centred on the national theme, “50 Years of Emergency: Lessons for Indian Democracy,” encouraging participants to reflect on the 1975 Emergency and examine its lasting impact on India's democratic framework, civil liberties, governance, and constitutional institutions. Through informed debate and parliamentary-style deliberations, students explored the significance of safeguarding democratic principles and protecting fundamental rights.
The programme commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by the rendition of Vande Mataram, setting a patriotic tone for the day's proceedings.
Welcoming the gathering, Mangal Jakhar, Deputy Director of My Bharat Sikkim under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, highlighted the importance of empowering young citizens through democratic engagement. He emphasised that informed dialogue, critical thinking, and active participation are essential for strengthening India's democratic institutions and building responsible leadership among the youth.
The event was graced by Dronacharya Awardee Sandhya Gurung as the Chief Guest, while Ashish Trivedi, Assistant Commandant of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), attended as the Special Guest. Dr. Rohit Rathi, Registrar of The ICFAI University Sikkim, welcomed the dignitaries and participants and reaffirmed the university's commitment to promoting civic awareness and leadership among students.
In her address, Sandhya Gurung encouraged young people to adopt the principles of the "3Ds" — Dedication, Discipline, and Determination — stating that these values are fundamental to personal success and responsible citizenship. She stressed that democracy flourishes only when citizens actively participate in public life, uphold constitutional values, and contribute positively to society.
Addressing the gathering, Ashish Trivedi underscored the importance of national unity, respect for democratic institutions, and responsible civic engagement. He urged students to remain informed, aware, and committed to the ideals enshrined in the Constitution while contributing towards the nation's progress.

The Youth Parliament witnessed participants displaying an impressive understanding of parliamentary procedures, constitutional provisions, and public policy. Students presented well-reasoned arguments on issues relating to governance, accountability, civil liberties, and institutional integrity. Their debates reflected a mature understanding of democratic processes and highlighted the importance of transparency, vigilance, and the protection of fundamental rights in a vibrant democracy.
The programme concluded with the felicitation of outstanding participants and a renewed pledge by the youth to uphold democratic ideals and actively contribute to nation-building. Organisers expressed confidence that initiatives such as the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament would continue to inspire informed, responsible, and socially conscious young leaders committed to realising the vision of Viksit Bharat.
