UGC Grants Autonomous Status to Asufii Christian Institute in Manipur

Imphal, February 24, 2026: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted autonomous status to Asufii Christian Institute, Punanamei, Mao, Manipur, affiliated to Manipur University.

According to an official letter issued by Dr. R. Manoj Kumar, Joint Secretary, UGC, the Commission in its meeting held on January 30, 2026, approved the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges to confer autonomous status on the institute for a period of five years - from the academic year 2026–27 to 2030–31.

The approval has been granted under Clause 7.4 of the UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2023.

The UGC has requested Manipur University to issue the necessary notification within 30 days regarding the grant of autonomous status. The college is required to comply with all provisions of the UGC Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, 2023, failing which action may be taken under the prescribed rules.

The institute will need to apply for extension of autonomous status at least three months before the completion of the autonomy period.

The conferment of autonomous status is expected to provide greater academic flexibility and strengthen the institution’s academic and administrative functioning.
