New Delhi, February 24, 2026: In a major boost to the rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Manipur, Union Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana–Gramin (PMAY–G) for the financial year 2025–26. The approval came during a meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho, who joined the discussions focused on accelerating the rehabilitation of families displaced by the ethnic violence that affected the state.
According to an official statement, the State Government had earlier submitted a proposal seeking special assistance for providing permanent housing to displaced families who lost their homes during the crisis. Following detailed deliberations, the Union Minister approved the construction of 5,000 new PMAY–G houses, marking a significant step towards restoring normalcy and improving the living conditions of affected families.
In addition to the housing approval, the Ministry of Rural Development has also sanctioned a special window under Awaas+ 2024 to identify, document, and verify eligible households affected by the violence. The special provision will enable the State Government to continue beneficiary registration through the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application, strictly in accordance with the guidelines of the PMAY–G scheme.

Officials stated that the special rehabilitation package also covers beneficiaries whose houses had previously been sanctioned under PMAY–G but were subsequently destroyed during the violence. Such families will now be eligible for assistance under the newly approved rehabilitation project, ensuring that no deserving beneficiary is left out.
The approval is expected to provide permanent housing and renewed hope to thousands of displaced families across Manipur. The initiative also reflects the continued commitment of both the Central and State Governments to strengthening rehabilitation efforts, restoring livelihoods, and ensuring the dignified resettlement of those affected by the recent unrest.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the Union Government for its continued support, stating that the decision would significantly accelerate the state's rehabilitation programme and help affected communities rebuild their lives with security and dignity.
