ITLF Mourns Demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte, Reiterates Demand for Separate Administration

Churachandpur, February 23: The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) has expressed profound grief over the demise of Thanlon MLA Vungzagin Valte, who passed away on February 21, 2026, after nearly three years of suffering from injuries sustained during violence in May 2023.

ITLF Mourns Demise of MLA Vungzagin Valte, Reiterates Demand for Separate Administration

In a press release issued on Monday, the ITLF stated that Valte was allegedly assaulted by a mob on May 4, 2023, after meeting the then Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh. The forum recalled that Valte was left critically injured on the roadside, while his driver, Pu Thanggoulal Zou, was killed on the spot.

Describing his death as a painful testament to the violence endured by the Kuki-Zo community, the ITLF claimed that the killing of Valte and the loss of over 200 Kuki-Zo lives reflect “systematic violence, displacement and destruction” inflicted upon their people. The forum alleged that villages were burnt, homes and churches destroyed, and civilians forced to flee from their ancestral areas.

The ITLF further raised concerns over the absence of arrests in connection with the attack on the MLA, stating that it reflects serious questions about the State’s ability to ensure security and justice.

Reiterating its long-standing demand, the forum said the call for a Separate Administration in the form of a Union Territory with legislature is not a matter of political ambition but one of survival, dignity and constitutional rights. It appealed to the Government of India to initiate an immediate and honourable political settlement ensuring safety, justice and self-administration for the Kuki-Zo people.

The ITLF informed that Vungzagin Valte will be laid to rest on Tuesday and urged the public to cooperate with funeral arrangements and maintain peace and solemnity.

While mourning with the bereaved family, the forum said Valte’s sacrifice should strengthen collective resolve and unity in pursuing a just and lasting future for their people.
