The Gastroenterology academic session and surgical workshop, held on February 24, was jointly organised by the Department of Surgery, ZMC&H and the Association of Surgeons of Mizoram. As part of the workshop, pancreatic cancer surgery was performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques - a first for the state.
Specialist doctors from Manipal Hospital Salt Lake participated in the programme and handled the pancreatic cancer case. In collaboration with Dr. Benjamine Khiangte, Medical Gastroenterologist (Gastro & Liver Clinic), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedures were also conducted free of cost for eight patients in need.
Notably, this marked the first time EUS services were carried out in a government hospital in Mizoram. Doctors at ZMC&H expressed optimism that with advanced equipment like EUS now available, many patients who earlier required referral outside the state can receive treatment locally, reducing both hardship and expenses.

The workshop concluded with an evening CME seminar focusing on advancements in Gastroenterology and the future of medical care in Mizoram. The session was chaired by Dr. Samuel Lalhruaizela, Associate Professor, while Prof. John Lalliandinga, HOD, Department of Surgery, delivered the vote of thanks. Surgeons and doctors from across Mizoram attended the programme.
