Tawang, February 12: The second edition of the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship was officially flagged off on the waters of the Tawangchu River in Arunachal Pradesh’s picturesque Tawang district on Wednesday, attracting more than 100 athletes from India and several other countries. The championship, set amidst the breathtaking Himalayan landscape, has emerged as one of the region’s premier adventure sports events and a significant platform for promoting kayaking and water sports.

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the high-altitude championship and welcomed participants, officials, and sports enthusiasts to the event. Describing the occasion as a proud moment for the state, he said the growing popularity of the championship reflects Arunachal Pradesh’s increasing stature as a destination for adventure tourism and international sporting competitions.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to the various organisations and agencies that contributed to the successful organisation of the event. He acknowledged the efforts of the Arunachal Olympic Association, Arunachal Kayaking & Canoeing Association (AKCA), Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA), the organising committee, the Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), district administration, and other stakeholders for ensuring smooth arrangements and athlete participation.
Khandu congratulated all the competitors and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity to showcase their skills on one of the country’s most challenging and scenic kayaking courses. He expressed confidence that the championship would continue to grow in scale and prestige while inspiring more young people from Arunachal Pradesh to take up water sports and pursue excellence in athletics.

A notable highlight of the event was the presence of Bilquis Mir, India’s first female Olympic Jury Member in Kayaking and Canoeing. Praising her achievements, Khandu described her journey as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes across the country. He said her success demonstrates how dedication, perseverance, and hard work can help individuals reach the highest levels of international sport.
The event also witnessed the launch of the Indian Team Training Camp for the upcoming Asian Games, further enhancing the significance of the championship.
Against the majestic backdrop of the Himalayas, the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship continues to strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s reputation as a hub for adventure sports, tourism, and international sporting excellence.
