Dimapur, February 3: In a move aimed at strengthening grassroots governance and enhancing community participation in local administration, Advisor to the Government of Nagaland H. Tovihoto Ayemi on Tuesday inaugurated the newly constructed Niu Colony Council Hall-cum-Office Building at Niu Colony, Dimapur.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by community leaders, colony residents, local representatives, and well-wishers, who gathered to mark the completion of a facility expected to serve as an important hub for community engagement, decision-making, and local governance.
Speaking at the event, Ayemi described the Council Hall-cum-Office Building as a significant milestone for the residents of Niu Colony and an important addition to the infrastructure supporting grassroots democracy. He said that strong local institutions are the foundation of effective governance and play a crucial role in ensuring that the voices of citizens are heard and reflected in development initiatives.
“The establishment of this facility is not merely the construction of a building; it is the creation of a platform where community voices can be amplified, local issues can be discussed, and collective decisions can be taken for the welfare of the people,” Ayemi remarked.
He noted that the Council Hall would provide a dedicated space for meetings, consultations, public discussions, and community programmes, thereby improving coordination between colony leaders and residents. According to him, such infrastructure is essential for fostering transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local administration.
Congratulating the Niu Colony community on the successful completion of the project, Ayemi said the achievement reflected the spirit of unity, cooperation, and shared responsibility among residents. He expressed confidence that the new facility would help strengthen community bonds while promoting participatory development and inclusive governance.
The Advisor further emphasised the importance of empowering local bodies and encouraging active citizen involvement in governance processes. He stated that sustainable development can only be achieved when communities work together with government institutions to identify challenges and implement solutions that address local needs.
In a statement issued following the event, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland unit welcomed the inauguration and described it as another step towards strengthening grassroots institutions in line with the vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.” The party noted that empowering local communities and improving governance at the grassroots level remain key priorities in achieving inclusive and people-centric development.
According to the BJP Nagaland unit, facilities such as community council halls contribute significantly to participatory democracy by providing spaces where residents can engage directly in local decision-making processes. The party also highlighted the importance of strengthening community institutions to ensure effective implementation of developmental programmes and welfare initiatives.
The inauguration was also viewed as part of broader efforts to promote community-driven development and improve local governance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Supporters of the initiative noted that investments in local infrastructure not only improve administrative efficiency but also encourage greater public participation in civic affairs.
