Naga Students Oppose Mandatory Meetei Mayek Script on Vehicle Registration Plates

Imphal, February 25: The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has strongly opposed the recent directive by the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup (MEELAL) mandating the compulsory inscription of vehicle registration numbers in Meetei Mayek script across the State.

In a press communiqué issued on Tuesday, ANSAM termed the move as “illogical, constitutionally infirm and democratically indefensible,” asserting that no organisation has the authority to impose the linguistic symbol of one community on a plural society.

The association stated that Manipur is home to diverse indigenous communities with distinct linguistic and cultural identities. It argued that enforcing a single script across all communities undermines constitutional guarantees of equality and cultural freedom, and risks disturbing communal harmony.

Highlighting the State’s fragile situation amid ongoing tensions, ANSAM cautioned that advancing such a contentious mandate at this juncture could aggravate divisions and threaten peace.

The organisation declared that it would not accept any demand that infringes upon the rights and identity of the Naga and tribal communities. It urged the Government of Manipur to immediately intervene, restrain what it termed unconstitutional impositions, and uphold principles of justice, plurality and equal citizenship.
