Mizoram Chief Minister Inaugurates Two-Day Knowledge Exchange Health Conclave in Aizawl

Aizawl, February 3, 2026: The Chief Minister of Mizoram on Tuesday inaugurated a two-day Knowledge Exchange Health Conclave organised under the Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project (MHSSP) of the Health & Family Welfare Department at Falkland Park, Aizawl.

In his inaugural address, the Chief Minister said the state government considers public health a fundamental pillar of Mizoram’s overall development and has therefore accorded the health sector top priority. He highlighted the introduction of the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme (MUHCS), describing it as one of the best healthcare systems in the country, providing cashless treatment to patients through empanelled hospitals.

The Chief Minister noted that health infrastructure across the state has been significantly strengthened through the upgradation of district hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). He added that advanced medical equipment has been procured and several new initiatives undertaken to improve service delivery. A large part of these achievements, he said, has been made possible through MHSSP, with support from the Central Government and the World Bank. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also released a Coffee Table Book.

Health Minister Pi Lalrinpuii, in her address, stated that MHSSP has led to substantial improvements in medical facilities and health centres through effective utilisation of resources and procurement of modern equipment. She added that Mizoram has earned national-level quality certifications for several of its healthcare institutions.

The Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project was launched in 2021 with World Bank funding and is being implemented over a five-year period, scheduled to conclude in March 2026.

Project Director, MHSSP, Dr. Lily Chhakchhuak, presented an overview of the project, stating that the total project cost stands at Rs. 280 crore. As of January 2026, four of the five Project Development Objectives and 14 of the 16 Intermediate Result Indicators have been achieved, with the remaining targets expected to be met by the end of March 2026.

One of the flagship initiatives under MHSSP is the Mizoram Universal Health Care Scheme, launched in March 2025. Under the scheme, an enrolment rate of 91 percent has already been achieved. In recognition of this performance, the National Health Authority conferred the “Best Performance in Achieving Card Saturation” award on Mizoram in January 2026.

The two-day conclave is being attended by health sector experts and representatives from several states, including Telangana, Meghalaya, Nagaland, West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, along with representatives from the Gates Foundation and the North Eastern Council.
