Manipur CM Visits Family of Zosangkim Hmar, Brutally Assaulted and Burned Alive on November 7, 2024

Jiribam, February 11: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand visited Jairolpokpi (Zairawn) a Hmar Village to meet the family of Zosangkim Hmar, a 31-year-old Hmar woman who was brutally assaulted and burned alive during a violent attack on November 7, 2024.

The horrific incident occurred around 9 PM, when armed assailants allegedly belonging to a Meitei armed group stormed the village. During the attack, 17 homes were set on fire, reducing properties to ashes and spreading terror among residents. In the midst of the chaos, Zosangkim Hmar, wife of Ngurthansang Hmar and a young mother, was shot in the leg, rendering her unable to escape.

Disregarding her humanity and the unimaginable grief of her family, the attackers allegedly raped, tortured, and burned her alive - an act that has left the community shaken and mourning.

During his visit, the Chief Minister met the bereaved husband and other family members, sharing in their grief and expressing his condolences. He listened to their concerns and assured them that their grievances would be addressed with seriousness and sensitivity. He also interacted with village elders and residents to understand their priorities and needs in the aftermath of the violence.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the Government of Manipur remains committed to justice, rehabilitation, and the restoration of peace. He stated that the state government continues to work in line with the peace and reconciliation initiatives envisioned by Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to restore normalcy and lasting harmony in Manipur.

Later in the day, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for the construction of infrastructure for the 7th India Reserve Battalion (IRB) at the STC Complex in Jairolpokpi, in the presence of the Hon’ble MLA of Jiribam A/C, the Chief Secretary, and the Deputy Commissioner/District Magistrate of Jiribam District. The initiative aims to strengthen the internal security framework and enhance the capacity for maintaining law and order in the region.

Describing the project as a step toward safeguarding peace, stability, and the well-being of the people, he reaffirmed the government’s resolve to build a secure and resilient Manipur.

For the family of Zosangkim Hmar and the residents of Jairolpokpi, the visit marked a solemn moment of acknowledgment - a recognition of a life lost in a brutal act of violence and a renewed promise of justice and peace.
