Kangpokpi, February 2: The Kangpokpi District Internally Displaced Welfare Committee (KDIDWC) has expressed serious concern over the State government’s announcement regarding the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) by March 31, 2026, stating that the target is unrealistic due to the lack of basic infrastructure in the proposed resettlement areas.

Internally displaced families take shelter at a relief camp, highlighting the continuing humanitarian crisis and challenges to resettlement.

In a press statement issued on January 29, the Committee said the absence of essential facilities such as schools, hospitals, and proper road connectivity makes it impossible for IDPs to safely return to their homes. It highlighted that key lifeline roads to areas like Kangchup area, Phailengmol (Island Block), Khammelok area, and Chingdai area remain inadequate, severely affecting the resettlement process.

The KDIDWC also raised concerns over financial assistance, stating that the current allocation of ₹3 lakh per family under PMAY-G is insufficient to construct a livable house. The Committee urged the government to revisit the amount so that displaced families can rebuild their lives with dignity.

Further, the Committee demanded the immediate release of damage assessment forms and compensation for losses suffered by IDPs during the crisis. It criticised the lack of transparency in the resettlement process and called for meaningful involvement of community leaders in decision-making.

Highlighting the impact on education, the KDIDWC said the shortage of student facilities in Kangpokpi district has adversely affected IDP children. It urged the government to allocate funds for the construction of schools and provide educational support to ensure uninterrupted learning for displaced students.

Emphasising the human aspect of the crisis, the KDIDWC stated that IDPs are not merely statistics but people who deserve dignity, respect, and security.

The KDIDWC reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for the rights and welfare of internally displaced persons and urged the government to take concrete steps to address their concerns in a timely and humane manner.
