Journalists Stage Sit-In in Imphal Over Assault on Senior Editor

Imphal, Feb 20: Journalists in Manipur on Friday staged a sit-in demonstration at Keisampat Leimajam Leikai in Imphal, protesting the recent assault on senior editor Khoirom Loyalakpa by unidentified armed miscreants.

Holding placards that read “We oppose attack on media persons” and “Stop intimidating media persons,” members of the media fraternity condemned the attempted attack and demanded swift action against those responsible.

According to reports, Loyalakpa was intercepted by unidentified armed men while driving near Hatta Cemetery in Imphal East district on Wednesday night. The assailants allegedly fired two rounds at the rear window of his vehicle and physically assaulted him before fleeing the scene.

Addressing the protest, All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) President Asem Bhakta described the incident as a life attempt on the editor. “Today’s protest is against the life attempt made on editor Loyalakpa by unidentified armed men. We demand to know who and why this life attempt was made. We strongly condemn such acts,” he said.

The protestors called for a thorough investigation and immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of media professionals in the state.
