Hardcore NSCN (Niki Sumi) Insurgent Surrenders in Arunachal’s Khonsa

Khonsa, February 3: A hardcore insurgent of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN–Niki Sumi faction) surrendered before security forces in the Khonsa area of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday, officials said.

The surrendered individual has been identified as Wangjong Wangsu (37), a self-styled Lieutenant of the NSCN (Niki Sumi) faction and a resident of Longding district.

According to officials, the surrender followed a focused intelligence-based operation launched on February 2 after specific inputs indicated the presence of the insurgent in and around Khonsa Bazaar. Security forces activated local sources to establish contact and initiated sustained persuasion efforts to encourage the insurgent to lay down arms.

“Based on credible intelligence regarding the presence of a hardcore insurgent in the general area of Khonsa Bazaar and its vicinity, a focused operation was launched. Own sources were tasked to establish contact and persuade him to surrender,” an official said.

Officials added that continuous pressure combined with relentless negotiations motivated the insurgent to abandon violence and rejoin the mainstream. The efforts ultimately yielded a positive outcome, leading to his surrender.

The insurgent was subsequently taken into custody by a joint team of the Assam Rifles and 26 FIT. During the operation, security forces recovered one .32 mm pistol with four rounds of ammunition, an appointment letter, and a walkie-talkie from his possession.

Authorities said the successful surrender highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the humane, persuasive approach adopted by security forces in the region.

Assam Rifles, in coordination with other security agencies, reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region, while continuing efforts to motivate misguided youths to renounce violence and return to the mainstream.
