Shah was received at the Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport by Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, senior state government officials and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders. His visit forms part of a broader tour of the North-East region and comes at a time when Tripura is witnessing heightened political activity ahead of the elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

The main conference is being held at the Badharghat International Fair Ground (Hapania Ground), where delegates, government officials and language experts from several states and Union Territories have gathered to participate in discussions related to the promotion and implementation of official language policies.

According to officials, the conference seeks to encourage greater use of Indian languages in administration, governance and public communication while facilitating the exchange of ideas and best practices among participating regions. The event is expected to witness deliberations on linguistic diversity, language promotion and the role of official languages in strengthening governance and public engagement.

During the programme, the Union Home Minister is scheduled to release a special North-East edition of the journal “Rajbhasha Bharati”, which focuses on issues related to official language implementation and linguistic development. He will also unveil several publications on Indian languages, highlighting the country's rich linguistic heritage and diversity.

A major highlight of the conference will be the presentation of approximately 80 awards to individuals, institutions and organizations for their outstanding contributions to the promotion and development of official languages. The awards are intended to recognize efforts made in implementing language policies and encouraging the use of Indian languages in various sectors.

Apart from attending the language conference, Shah is expected to hold a series of meetings with Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior BJP leaders. Political observers believe the discussions will focus on organizational matters, governance issues and preparations for the upcoming TTAADC elections.

Officials said the Union Home Minister's visit is significant not only from an administrative perspective but also politically, as the BJP seeks to strengthen its outreach and consolidate support in tribal areas ahead of the council polls.

Before arriving in Tripura, Shah visited Assam, where he reviewed border security arrangements and launched the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP), a flagship initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and development in border villages.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements have been put in place across Agartala in view of the high-profile visit. The West Tripura district administration, state police and central security agencies have coordinated extensive security measures around the airport, conference venue and other key locations.

The visit also witnessed political reactions from opposition parties. The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) staged demonstrations in parts of Agartala, alleging that the conference was being used to promote what it termed “Hindi imposition.” Congress leaders expressed concerns about the protection of regional and indigenous languages and called for greater emphasis on linguistic diversity.

Despite the political debate surrounding the event, officials emphasized that the conference is intended to promote all Indian languages and facilitate dialogue on language-related issues across regions. Participants from different states are expected to share experiences and recommendations aimed at strengthening multilingual governance and preserving linguistic heritage.

Shah's visit and the conference are expected to place Tripura at the centre of discussions on language policy and regional development, while also providing a platform for recognizing contributions made towards the promotion of official languages across India.
