Tripura CM Saha Alleges Conspiracy Behind ‘Unjustified’ Roman Script Demand for Kokborok

Agartala, February 15: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday asserted that the state government remains fully committed to the preservation, promotion, and expansion of the Kokborok language, while alleging that recent demands for adopting the Roman script are politically motivated attempts to mislead tribal students.

Addressing the state-level Tribal Students’ Conference organized by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Saha said the government is working tirelessly for the holistic development of tribal students across the state.

He claimed that continuous efforts are being made to raise what he described as “unjustified demands” for the Roman script for Kokborok, suggesting that such moves are driven by “negative political motives.” According to the Chief Minister, these efforts aim to create confusion and division among tribal communities.

Saha called upon students and stakeholders to remain united against what he termed divisive and disruptive politics, urging them instead to focus on constructive nation-building.

The Kokborok script issue has been a subject of debate in Tripura, with differing opinions over the use of Bengali or Roman scripts. The Chief Minister reiterated that the government’s priority is the protection and strengthening of the language while ensuring the overall development of tribal communities.
