Baghmara, Jan 28, 2026: A two-day cultural extravaganza, the Tyisam Festival, commenced today with great enthusiasm and splendour at Golden Beach, Baghmara, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Garo Hills region.

The festival was inaugurated by Meghalaya Tourism Minister T. D. Shira in the presence of local MLA Kartush R. Marak, along with several other dignitaries and guests.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Shira, who also holds charge of the Tourism, Agriculture and Fishery Departments, expressed his delight at being part of the event. He remarked that the Simsang Beach at Baghmara reminded him of Chennai’s famous Marina Beach, adding that the stretch of sand at Baghmara is significantly larger in comparison.
The Minister urged the local community to actively promote domestic tourism by creating a welcoming environment for visitors, particularly at Simsang Beach, which he said has immense potential to boost the local economy. He further stated that the State Tourism Department is committed to developing tourism across Meghalaya and encouraged the people of South Garo Hills to make full use of available natural and cultural resources to develop tourist-friendly destinations.

The inaugural day featured a vibrant array of activities, including a flower show, vegetable show, singing and dancing competitions, indigenous games, beach sports, and musical nights. Renowned Garo Hills bands such as North Wind and Rough Road, along with local bands, added to the festive spirit.
The Tyisam Festival will also highlight the region’s rich cultural traditions with special emphasis on local cuisine, music, handicrafts, and other indigenous produce, offering visitors a unique cultural experience over the two-day celebration.
