New Delhi, Jan 28, 2026: Mizoram Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Richard Vanlalhmangaiha has urged the Central Government to take immediate steps to repair and strengthen the Sairang–Khamrang road before the onset of the monsoon season, warning that delays could lead to a repeat of the severe transportation crisis experienced in the state last year.

The issue was raised on Tuesday during a meeting of floor leaders of various political parties held ahead of the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament. The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, took place at the Parliament House Annexe in New Delhi and provided an opportunity for political leaders to highlight important issues affecting their respective states.
During the discussion, Vanlalhmangaiha drew attention to the strategic importance of the Sairang–Khamrang road, which serves as one of Mizoram’s critical transportation links. He emphasized that the condition of the road directly affects the movement of people, essential commodities, and services across the state.
The MP recalled the hardships faced by residents during the previous monsoon season when heavy rainfall caused extensive damage to key road networks in Mizoram. The resulting disruptions led to transportation difficulties, delays in the movement of goods, and challenges in maintaining the supply of essential commodities. According to him, the experience highlighted the vulnerability of the state's road infrastructure to extreme weather conditions.
Vanlalhmangaiha stressed that proactive intervention is necessary to prevent a similar situation from arising this year. He urged the Centre to expedite repair and maintenance works on the Sairang–Khamrang stretch and ensure that vulnerable sections of the road are strengthened before the arrival of heavy rains.
The MP noted that road connectivity is particularly important for Mizoram due to its hilly terrain and limited transport alternatives. Any disruption to major road corridors can have far-reaching consequences for economic activity, public services, and the daily lives of residents. He therefore called on the Ministry concerned to treat the matter as a priority and allocate the necessary resources for timely completion of repair works.
According to sources, Vanlalhmangaiha emphasized that preventive measures taken before the monsoon would be far more effective and economical than emergency repairs undertaken after road damage occurs. He also highlighted the need for long-term infrastructure improvements to enhance the resilience of roads against landslides, erosion, and other weather-related challenges common in the region.
The appeal comes amid growing concerns about the condition of several road stretches in Mizoram ahead of the rainy season. State authorities and public representatives have repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining critical road networks to ensure uninterrupted connectivity and the smooth movement of goods and services.
Officials noted that the Sairang–Khamrang road remains a vital link for transportation and commerce, and timely repairs would help safeguard mobility, support economic activities, and reduce the risk of disruptions during the monsoon months. The MP's intervention is expected to draw attention to the issue at the national level and encourage faster action from the concerned authorities.
