Meghalaya Marks 54th Statehood Day at Baghmara, Honouring Legacy of Captain Williamson A. Sangma

Baghmara, January 21, 2026: Meghalaya on Tuesday celebrated its 54th Statehood Day at Baghmara for the first time, marking a historic moment as the celebration was held at the homeland of the state’s founding father, Captain Williamson A. Sangma.

In a message marking the occasion, Conrad K. Sangma said the decision to hold the celebrations in Baghmara reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that no region of Meghalaya is left behind in the state’s development journey. He described the event as a tribute to the vision, unity and sacrifices that led to the formation of Meghalaya as a full-fledged state.

Recalling the struggle for statehood, the Chief Minister said Meghalaya’s identity was shaped by unity, sacrifice and divine blessings. While noting that the state has made significant progress over the years, he emphasised that true development must be experienced in the everyday lives of the people across all regions.

He urged residents of the state to rise above negativity and hatred, and to remember the sacrifices made by forefathers who turned the dream of statehood into reality. Stressing the importance of social harmony, he called upon citizens to move forward with unity, confidence and determination.
