Aizawl, January 21, 2026: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has accused the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) government of failing to make adequate preparations for the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, alleging that the state administration is not ready to conduct the polls within the constitutionally mandated timeframe.
Addressing a press conference at the Aizawl Press Club on Monday, Congress spokesperson Dr. Lallianchhunga expressed concern over what he described as the government’s lack of urgency in preparing for the municipal elections. He pointed out that the tenure of the present Aizawl Municipal Corporation is scheduled to expire on March 1, 2026, and argued that the government has had sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements for the election process.
According to Dr. Lallianchhunga, the expiry date of the current municipal body's term has long been known, making it difficult to justify any delay in preparations. He maintained that ensuring timely elections is a fundamental requirement in a democratic system and that the government should have already taken all necessary steps to facilitate the formation of a new municipal body before the current term ends.
The Congress leader also highlighted the role of the State Election Commission (SEC), Mizoram, stating that the commission has been actively carrying out preparatory work for the elections. He claimed that the SEC has already completed the essential procedures required for the conduct of the polls and that there appear to be no major procedural or administrative obstacles from the election authority’s side.
Dr. Lallianchhunga alleged that despite the readiness of the State Election Commission, the ruling ZPM government has failed to demonstrate the same level of commitment toward holding the elections on time. He further claimed that the government may be attempting to avoid the municipal elections for political reasons.
The Congress alleged that recent electoral outcomes, including the Dampa Assembly by-election and the Lai Autonomous District Council (LADC) elections, have created concerns within the ruling party. According to the opposition party, these political developments may have influenced the government's approach toward the AMC elections.
Accusing the ZPM of being reluctant to face voters at the municipal level, Dr. Lallianchhunga claimed that the government was searching for reasons to postpone or delay the polls. He asserted that democratic institutions must function according to constitutional provisions and that elections should not be influenced by political calculations.
The Congress reiterated its demand that the AMC elections be conducted within the stipulated timeframe and in accordance with democratic norms. The party urged the state government to cooperate fully with the State Election Commission and ensure that the electoral process proceeds without unnecessary delays.

The opposition party also stressed the importance of urban local bodies in delivering essential civic services and representing the interests of urban residents. It argued that any delay in conducting municipal elections could affect local governance and weaken democratic accountability.
As political debate over the issue continues, attention is now focused on the state government and the State Election Commission regarding the scheduling and conduct of the AMC elections. The Congress has maintained that timely elections are essential to uphold democratic principles and ensure uninterrupted municipal governance in Mizoram’s capital city.
