JTC Alleges KNF Leader Tiger Kipgen Threatened to Burn Down Naga Village

Imphal, Jan 30: The Joint Tribes Council Manipur (JTC) has expressed serious concern over alleged grave threats, intimidation and armed movement directed at indigenous Naga residents of Ireng (Puilong) Naga Village in Kangpokpi district, warning that continued inaction by authorities has heightened fear and insecurity in the area.

JTC Alleges KNF Leader Tiger Kipgen Threatened to Burn Down Naga Village

In a press release issued on January 30, the JTC stated that on January 12, 2026, an individual identifying himself as Tiger Kipgen (Thangboi/Haogenthang Kipgen), described as a leader of the Kuki National Front (SoO groups), allegedly issued explicit life-threatening warnings to villagers, claiming the Naga population would be fired upon and the entire village burnt down.

According to the council, the situation further escalated around 2 pm on the same day, when about 30 fully armed cadres were reportedly seen moving towards Ireng Naga Village with the alleged intent to intimidate and terrorise civilians.

The JTC said that an FIR was lodged on January 14, 2026, at Gamnong Saporimeina Police Station in Kangpokpi district against Tiger Kipgen and armed cadres of the Kuki National Front. However, it alleged that no concrete action has been taken so far, despite the seriousness of the threats.

The council informed that the Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, has submitted formal petitions to several authorities, including the Union Home Minister, Governor of Manipur, Union Home Secretary, Secretary (Internal Security), MHA, Director General of NIA, Chief Secretary of Manipur, DGP Manipur, senior Assam Rifles officials, and the district administration and police of Kangpokpi.

The Joint Tribes Council appealed to both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur to initiate stern, immediate and time-bound action against the individuals and armed groups involved, strictly in accordance with the law, to ensure the safety and security of innocent civilians.

Reiterating its firm stand, the JTC stated that no designated SoO camps or illegal camps should be allowed in the Naga foothills, no unauthorised roads, including Animal Road, should be permitted on Naga ancestral land, and illegal poppy cultivation must not be tolerated in Naga areas.

In a concluding statement, the council warned that while it remains committed to peace, rule of law and protection of indigenous ancestral land and lives, continued silence and lack of timely action by authorities could lead to unavoidable developments, for which it said the council would not be held responsible.
