Imphal, Jan 30: The Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Thursday graced the opening of the 25th edition of Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026 at the Chorus Repertory Theatre, marking a significant cultural moment for the state.
Organised by the National School of Drama, the festival - widely regarded as the world’s largest international theatre event - is being held this year in its largest-ever format, spanning multiple venues across India and seven continents.
The opening presentation featured KANUPRIYA, directed by the legendary Ratan Thiyam and based on the poetic work of Dharamvir Bharti. The staging held special significance as it was performed at the theatre founded by Ratan Thiyam in Imphal in 1976.

The inaugural event celebrated Manipur’s rich theatrical heritage and paid tribute to Ratan Thiyam’s enduring contribution to Indian and world theatre. Speakers highlighted the symbolic importance of KANUPRIYA being staged at the Chorus Repertory Theatre, calling it a reaffirmation of Manipur’s central place in contemporary theatre discourse.
The occasion also expressed confidence that Bharat Rang Mahotsav 2026 would inspire meaningful dialogue, foster cultural exchange, and underscore the transformative power of theatre across societies and continents.
