Diphu MP Slams Police, District Administration Over “Shocking Negligence” at National Rail Event

Diphu, January 19: Lok Sabha MP Amarsing Tisso on Sunday came down heavily on the district administration and Assam Police for what he termed “shocking negligence” during a nationally significant railway event at Diphu Railway Station.

The sharp criticism followed the special flagging-off ceremony of the Dibrugarh–Gomtinagar–Dibrugarh Amrit Bharat Express, a flagship rail service that was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event drew thousands of passengers and local residents to the platform, reflecting strong public enthusiasm for improved rail connectivity in the Northeast.

However, MP Tisso expressed serious concern over the complete absence of senior district administration officials and apex-level Assam Police officers at the venue. Speaking to the media after the ceremony, the MP from Diphu said there was no magisterial presence or senior police supervision to manage the large crowd.

“Not a single magistrate or senior Assam Police officer was present to oversee crowd control,” Tisso alleged. “It was only a handful of Government Railway Police and railway police personnel who somehow managed the massive gathering, even as regular trains were moving close to platform number two where thousands had assembled. This situation was extremely risky and entirely avoidable.”

Highlighting the gravity of the lapse, the MP said events of national importance—particularly those linked to the Prime Minister’s initiatives and aimed at boosting connectivity in the Northeast—should be accorded the highest level of administrative priority. According to him, the absence of proper planning, coordination, and security deployment reflected a failure to treat the occasion with the seriousness it deserved.

“This is not merely a matter of protocol; it is fundamentally about public safety,” Tisso said. “When thousands gather near active railway tracks without adequate police deployment or magisterial oversight, lives are put at unnecessary risk. The district administration and police must explain why such a glaring absence occurred at an event of this stature.”

The Amrit Bharat Express service is being widely welcomed as a major step toward strengthening rail connectivity between Assam and Uttar Pradesh, with Diphu among its important stops. However, critics argue that the administrative apathy witnessed during the launch undermines the spirit of such developmental initiatives and raises broader questions about preparedness and governance in handling large public events in the district.
