The action followed a formal complaint lodged by Garima Saikia Garg, wife of the late artist, who accused Sarma of making personal and offensive comments aimed at Garg’s character and legacy. The complaint, filed with the Crime Branch in Guwahati, cited a series of objectionable posts that, according to the complainant, not only tarnished the reputation of the beloved musician but also caused emotional distress to his family and supporters.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including provisions related to defamation, promotion of enmity, and criminal intimidation. Acting on the FIR, the Crime Branch detained Sarma from her residence in the Patharquarry area of Guwahati for questioning and further investigation.

Garima Garg, speaking after filing the complaint, said the posts were unacceptable and deeply hurtful to her family and his admirers. She noted that any remarks that defame or denigrate a revered cultural figure and his family members risk disturbing public harmony and sentiments.

Members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club also reached Dispur Police Station to support the FIR and demanded strict legal action against Sarma for her alleged repeated offensive remarks.

The case comes amid ongoing public debates and legal proceedings related to the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in September 2025, which have drawn significant public and media attention in Assam.
