The project seeks to cultivate a culture of reading among students while ensuring that children, particularly those in remote and underserved areas, have access to books that can supplement classroom learning. As part of the initiative, 21 Young Mizo Association (YMA) branches under the Sub-Headquarters YMA have actively participated in collecting books from the public.

The collection drive includes a wide range of reading materials such as textbooks, reference books, storybooks, children's literature, and other educational resources. Several YMA branches have already completed their collection efforts, while others continue to gather books from community members and well-wishers.

To ensure the quality and suitability of the donated materials, members of the YMA and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are reviewing and sorting the books before they are stored at the Sub-Headquarters YMA office. Once the collection and verification process is completed, the books will be distributed to 60 government schools across the Lungsen Aspirational Block.

Recently, the Luangmual Branch YMA successfully concluded its collection drive. During a function held to mark the occasion, Lunglei District Urban Development Officer Lalhruaitluangi and Sub-Deputy Commissioner Lalhlimpuii Pachuau joined YMA and SHG members in reviewing, organizing, and formally handing over the collected books.

Officials involved in the programme said the initiative is expected to strengthen literacy efforts, encourage a lifelong love for reading among children, and provide valuable learning materials to schools with limited library resources. They noted that reading not only enhances academic performance but also helps students develop creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills.

The “Book Nest Initiative” reflects a strong spirit of community participation and collaboration in advancing education in Lunglei district. With support from government departments, YMA branches, SHGs, and local residents, the programme is emerging as a meaningful effort to improve literacy and expand educational opportunities for students across the region.
