Aizawl, Sept. 24: Mizoram has lost one of its most distinguished educationists and women leaders with the passing of Rita Neihpuii, the first Mizo woman to earn a Master’s degree. She passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening at 7:40 pm at the age of 100, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of academic excellence, public service, and women’s empowerment.
Born in the late 1920s, Rita Neihpuii became a trailblazer in Mizo society at a time when higher education opportunities for women were extremely limited. Her determination and commitment to learning culminated in a historic achievement in 1951, when she completed her Master of Arts in History from Guwahati University, becoming the first Mizo woman to obtain a postgraduate degree.
Her educational journey began at PC Girls’ School, where she studied between 1938 and 1940. During her school years, she was recognized for her outstanding conduct, discipline, and dedication to studies. She later distinguished herself in the board examinations, emerging as one of the brightest female students from Mizoram during that era.
Following the completion of her postgraduate studies, Rita Neihpuii devoted her life to education and the development of future generations. She served as a lecturer at St. Mary’s College, Shillong, before returning to Mizoram, where she taught at Government Mizo High School and later at the College of Teachers’ Education, Aizawl. Through her teaching career, she inspired countless students and contributed significantly to the growth of education in the state.
Beyond academics, Rita Neihpuii played a leading role in social and community service. She was actively involved in the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), the largest women's organization in Mizoram. She served as Vice President of MHIP for 11 years from 1983 to 1993 and later as President from 1993 to 1995. During her tenure, she worked tirelessly to promote women's rights, education, and social welfare.
Her contributions extended into public service as well. She served as a member of the Mizoram State Commission and also worked as a conciliator in the Lok Adalat, where she helped promote justice and dispute resolution through dialogue and reconciliation.
