Shillong, Sept. 24: In a sudden political twist, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Shemborlang Rynjah has stepped down from office, citing health reasons.
Rynjah, who represents Lyngkyrdem constituency under the banner of the Voice of the People Party (VPP), submitted his resignation on Wednesday to KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana.
In his resignation letter, Rynjah stated, “After careful consultation, I have come to the conclusion that due to my current health situation, it’s in the best interest for both my well-being and the office that I decided to resign.”
Rynjah assumed charge as CEM earlier this year after the VPP registered a sweeping victory in the February MDC polls, securing control of the Council. His departure marks a significant shift in the KHADC leadership just months after his appointment.
The sudden vacancy in the top post is expected to trigger fresh political maneuvering within the KHADC, with speculation already mounting about possible successors and shifts in alliances.
While VPP leaders have yet to officially name a replacement, political observers say the development could test the party’s ability to maintain unity and stability in the Council.
Rynjah’s resignation has also stirred conversations among stakeholders about the continuity of ongoing policies and projects under his leadership.

The KHADC plays a crucial role in safeguarding the customs, culture, and land rights of the Khasi people, and the leadership change comes at a sensitive time when key issues are being deliberated.
As the Council awaits the formal acceptance of Rynjah’s resignation, the political landscape in the Khasi Hills remains fluid, with eyes now on the VPP’s next move.
