SHILLONG, September 3, 2025: Meghalaya achieved a historic milestone in its medical education journey as the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted the Letter of Permission for Shillong Medical College (SMC) to commence academic sessions. The college has been approved for an initial intake of 50 MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-26, with counselling starting on 4th September and classes set to begin on 27th September in line with the NEET-UG schedule.
State-Run Medical College Becomes Reality
The approval fulfills a long-standing aspiration for a state-run medical college, which will utilize existing facilities at Shillong Civil and Ganesh Das Hospitals as the teaching campus. This institution is expected to play a transformational role in addressing Meghalaya’s chronic shortage of doctors by expanding local medical education capacity.
Boost to Meghalaya’s Medical Capacity
With Shillong Medical College operational, Meghalaya’s total MBBS seats will rise to 144, encouraging more local students to pursue medical careers within the state. Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh hailed the new college as a “game-changer” for healthcare in Meghalaya and announced a second counselling round for MBBS seats scheduled for 26th September.
