For its inaugural academic year, the NMC has sanctioned 50 MBBS seats, enabling the college to admit its first batch of aspiring medical students. The addition of a new medical institution is expected to increase opportunities for students pursuing medical education within the state while addressing the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals.

Announcing the development, Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma described the approval as another major step in the government's mission to strengthen Assam's healthcare system through sustained investment in medical education. He said the establishment of Pragjyotishpur Medical College reflects the state's commitment to expanding access to quality medical training and creating a larger pool of skilled doctors to serve the people of Assam.

The new college is expected to play a vital role in improving healthcare delivery by producing well-trained medical graduates who can contribute to hospitals and healthcare institutions across the state. Besides undergraduate medical education, the institution is also expected to support clinical research, medical innovation, and community health programmes in the years ahead.

Over the past few years, Assam has significantly expanded its network of medical colleges as part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen public healthcare and reduce the shortage of medical professionals. The addition of Pragjyotishpur Medical College further reinforces this vision by increasing educational capacity and enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

Officials believe the new institution will not only provide greater opportunities for aspiring doctors but also contribute to better healthcare access, improved patient care, and long-term public health outcomes. The latest approval further strengthens Assam's position as one of the leading states in Northeast India for medical education and healthcare development.
