Guwahati, September 2: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday led the State Sports Day celebrations at Sarusajai, marking the birth anniversary of Bhogeswar Baruah, the state’s first Asian Games gold medallist and Arjuna Awardee.
In a landmark tribute, the Sarusajai Sports Complex has been officially renamed the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in honour of the legendary athlete, who remains an enduring symbol of sporting excellence in Assam.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said, “Assam’s first Arjuna Awardee Bhogeswar Baruah Dangoriya is a living legend and continues to inspire our sporting fraternity. I consider myself extremely privileged to rename one of Guwahati’s largest sports complexes in his honour.”
The celebrations witnessed a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening the sporting ecosystem of the state. These included:
• Appointment letters & cash rewards to 38 National Games medallists
• Presentation of State Sports Awards 2024–25 and announcement of 2025–26 awards
• Distribution of sports pensions & Khelo India 2025 awards
• Conferment of Bir Chilarai and NSS Awards
• Distribution of recurve bows by IASOWA (Prerona)
• Felicitation of U-17 Girls Subroto Cup winners
• Release of the Khel Maharan Coffee Table Book
The event, held in the gracious presence of Bhogeswar Baruah himself, was described by the Chief Minister as “a lifetime experience for every person committed to building a sporting ecosystem in Assam.”
The occasion not only celebrated the life and achievements of Bhogeswar Baruah but also reinforced Assam’s commitment to nurturing sporting talent and honouring its champions.
