GUWAHATI, September 4, 2025: In a significant boost to digital innovation and linguistic preservation, the Assamese language has officially been integrated into BharatGen, India's sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) platform developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. With this achievement, Assamese becomes the 10th Indian language to be incorporated into the national AI platform.
The integration has been carried out under the 'Digitizing Assam' initiative, which seeks to promote digital inclusion while preserving the state's rich linguistic and cultural heritage. The move is expected to expand access to AI-powered services for millions of Assamese-speaking people and create new opportunities for research, education, governance, and digital communication in the language.
Officials said the inclusion of Assamese in BharatGen represents a major milestone not only for Assam but also for the Northeast, positioning the region as an active participant in India's rapidly evolving artificial intelligence ecosystem. By enabling advanced language technologies, the initiative aims to ensure that Assamese remains relevant and accessible in an increasingly digital world.
The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) welcomed the development, describing it as an important step toward innovation, inclusivity, and cultural preservation. The ministry emphasized that technological progress should strengthen regional identities and ensure equal access to digital resources for speakers of all Indian languages.

"This is more than a technological integration—it is about strengthening the digital and cultural identity of the Northeast in the national and global arena," the ministry said in a statement.
Experts believe that Assamese integration into BharatGen will accelerate the development of AI-based applications such as language translation, speech recognition, virtual assistants, educational tools, and digital public services tailored to Assamese speakers. The initiative is also expected to support academic research and innovation in natural language processing.
The inclusion of Assamese in BharatGen underscores the growing importance of regional languages in India's digital transformation and reflects the government's broader vision of building an inclusive AI ecosystem that embraces the country's linguistic diversity while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
