GUWAHATI, September 4, 2025: In a landmark development for Assam and the Northeast, the Assamese language has officially become the 10th language to be integrated into BharatGen, India’s sovereign AI platform developed by IIT Bombay.
The initiative, launched under the ‘Digitizing Assam’ programme, is aimed at enhancing digital accessibility for Assamese speakers while safeguarding the state’s linguistic and cultural heritage. Officials noted that this inclusion will not only empower millions of Assamese-speaking citizens but also position the Northeast as a significant contributor to India’s AI-driven future.
Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) hailed the achievement as a step toward innovation, inclusivity, and cultural preservation, ensuring that technology bridges gaps rather than widens them.

“This is more than a technological integration - it is about strengthening the digital and cultural identity of the Northeast in the national and global arena,” the ministry stated.
With Assamese now part of BharatGen, experts believe the move will enable advanced AI-powered tools, services, and research opportunities, making the language future-ready in a rapidly digitalizing world.
