Aizawl, September 16, 2025: In a landmark moment for mixed martial arts in Northeast India, Nazareth Lalthazuala Hmar from Mizoram has signed a professional contract with ONE Championship, one of Asia’s premier mixed martial arts organizations. The achievement marks a historic first for Mizoram, making him the first fighter from the state to earn a contract with the internationally acclaimed promotion.
The signing represents the culmination of a remarkable journey for the young athlete, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most promising MMA talents. Before entering the world of professional combat sports, Lalthazuala worked as a truck and sumo driver. Despite limited resources and opportunities, he pursued his passion for martial arts with determination and discipline.
Lalthazuala began his professional MMA career in 2021 and has since built an impressive unbeaten record of 5-0 in the flyweight division. His rapid rise in the sport has been marked by consistent performances and several notable achievements. He is a three-time national flyweight MMA champion, establishing himself as one of the top competitors in the country.
Beyond MMA, the Aizawl native has also excelled in other combat sports. He won an international gold medal in kickboxing and secured a bronze medal in Wushu at the National Games 2025, showcasing his versatility and skill across multiple disciplines.
Born in Phuaibuang village and representing Team Joseph, Mizoram, Lalthazuala trains under Coach Manas Daimary at Dojang MMA in Guwahati, Assam. He credits his success to years of hard work, support from his coaches and family, and inspiration drawn from rising UFC star Joshua Van.

A devoted father to his three-year-old daughter, Lalthazuala said the contract signing is not only a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Mizoram and the wider Northeast region.
“This signing is a dream come true and a proud moment for Mizoram. I want to showcase the talent from our region on the global stage,” he said.
Officials from ONE Championship welcomed the addition of the undefeated flyweight, citing his aggressive fighting style, impressive record, and championship pedigree as key reasons behind the signing.
