First National Conference on Empowerment of Women Concludes in Tirupati

Tirupati, September 16, 2025: Ms. Pamin Lepcha, MLA of Gnathang-Machong and Advisor to the Women, Child, Senior Citizen, and Divyangjan Welfare Department of Sikkim, participated in the inaugural National Conference of Parliamentary and Legislative Committees on Empowerment of Women held at the Rahul Convention Centre in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

The two-day conference, which commenced on September 14, was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and brought together members of parliamentary and legislative committees from across the country. The event served as a significant platform for lawmakers and policymakers to exchange ideas, share best practices, and discuss strategies to strengthen women’s participation in governance and public life.

The conference focused on a wide range of issues concerning women’s empowerment, including representation in decision-making bodies, social and economic inclusion, healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and the role of legislatures in advancing gender equality. Participants also explored ways to improve coordination between State legislatures and Parliament in addressing gender-related concerns.

Several prominent dignitaries attended the conference, including Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu, and Dr. D. Purandeswari, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women. The leaders shared their perspectives on the progress made in promoting women’s rights and highlighted the need for continued legislative efforts to ensure inclusive development.

In his inaugural address, Om Birla emphasized the significant contributions of women throughout India’s freedom movement and democratic journey. He underscored the importance of enhancing women’s participation in governance, policymaking, and leadership roles at all levels.

The conference concluded with a valedictory session on September 15, where delegates reaffirmed their commitment to gender-sensitive governance and stronger institutional mechanisms for women’s empowerment. Participants also expressed appreciation to the Andhra Pradesh Legislature for successfully hosting the landmark national event.
