Mahur, September 6: Dima Hasao district marked a significant milestone in its sporting journey on Saturday with the inauguration of its first-ever Boxing Coaching Centre at Gerem village under the Mahur constituency. The facility is expected to provide aspiring young boxers from the district with professional training and create new opportunities to compete at state, national, and international levels.
The coaching centre, located near National Highway 54, was formally inaugurated by District Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey in the presence of Colonel Rakesh of 26 Assam Rifles, SDPO Vaibhav Rawat, IPS, local Gaon Buras, community leaders, sports enthusiasts, and residents of the village.
The initiative is the result of sustained efforts by the District Sports Officer, Dima Hasao, who worked to establish the district's first dedicated boxing training facility in response to the aspirations of local youth. Officials said the centre will offer structured coaching, promote physical fitness, and help identify talented athletes from remote parts of the hill district.
The project gained momentum following the visit of Hemanta Kumar Kalita, General Secretary of the Boxing Federation of India and the Assam Amateur Boxing Association, along with his coaching team. A series of discussions held in Haflong nearly two months ago laid the foundation for setting up the coaching centre.

Welcoming the initiative, MLA Nandita Gorlosa described the inauguration as a proud moment for Dima Hasao. In a social media post, she said the centre marks "a new beginning" for the district's youth by providing them with a platform to learn, train, and showcase their boxing talent.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma also lauded the development, stating that the government is strengthening sports infrastructure across the state to help young athletes pursue their dreams and emerge as future champions.
The establishment of the Boxing Coaching Centre is expected to encourage greater participation in sports, instill discipline and confidence among young people, and nurture a new generation of talented boxers from Dima Hasao. Local residents expressed optimism that the facility would inspire youth to embrace sports and bring laurels to Assam in the years ahead.
