MORIGAON, Sept 9: A senior gynaecologist at Morigaon Civil Hospital has been issued a showcause notice by the district health authorities after allegedly performing 21 Caesarean deliveries within a span of just 10 hours, raising serious questions about patient safety and sterilisation protocols.
According to official records, Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi carried out the operations between 3:40 PM on September 5 and 1:50 AM on September 6. The district administration has directed him to provide a detailed case report for each procedure, specifically clarifying whether proper sterilisation and pre-operative measures were observed.
Health officials have voiced concerns that conducting such a high volume of surgeries in a short period may compromise essential safety standards, potentially increasing the risk of post-surgical complications and infections.
In his defence, Dr. Bordoloi maintained that his professional experience and competence enabled him to handle multiple cases under emergency circumstances. “I have been performing surgeries for decades and can efficiently manage high workloads when needed,” he reportedly stated.
The incident has triggered a wider public debate on the strain faced by doctors in government hospitals, the adequacy of maternal care facilities, and whether urgent medical needs justify such extreme workloads. Experts stress that while emergency situations may demand rapid intervention, strict adherence to surgical protocols remains non-negotiable for ensuring patient safety.
The outcome of the showcause proceedings is awaited, even as the controversy highlights long-standing gaps in healthcare infrastructure and manpower in Assam’s public health system.
