Guwahati, September 16, 2025: Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora, currently serving as the Circle Officer of Goroimari in Kamrup district, was arrested on Monday by the Chief Minister's Special Vigilance Cell on charges of allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.
The arrest follows a months-long investigation into allegations of corruption and irregularities during her tenure as Circle Officer in Barpeta district.
According to officials, searches conducted at Bora's residence in Maligaon, Guwahati, led to the seizure of ₹92 lakh in cash along with gold jewellery valued at nearly ₹1 crore. During another raid at her rented accommodation in Barpeta, investigators recovered an additional ₹10 lakh in cash. The recovered cash, jewellery, and documents are now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
The vigilance inquiry was initiated after authorities received complaints regarding alleged irregularities in land administration and accusations that Bora was involved in controversial land transfers during her posting in Barpeta. Investigators are also examining whether the assets recovered were acquired through illegal means.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that the officer had remained under discreet surveillance for nearly six months before the arrest. He said the investigation began after allegations surfaced regarding the illegal transfer of land owned by members of the Hindu community to suspicious individuals.

"We had suspicions that during her tenure she was involved in irregular land transfers. Based on this, we initiated a covert investigation," the Chief Minister said.
Officials further revealed that more than 25 vigilance complaints are reportedly pending against Bora. Authorities are also investigating her alleged ownership of multiple properties in Guwahati and Barpeta.
As part of the probe, the Special Vigilance Cell conducted searches at the residence of Surajit Deka, an employee of the Barpeta Revenue Circle Office and an alleged associate of the officer. Investigators are examining financial records, property documents, and other evidence to determine the extent of the alleged corruption.
The investigation is continuing, and officials have indicated that further legal action may follow depending on the findings of the ongoing probe.
