Silchar, August 20, 2025: Barak Valley is set to witness a major transformation in its healthcare sector with the rollout of several ambitious medical infrastructure projects aimed at improving healthcare access, expanding treatment capacity, and strengthening public health services across the region.
Among the most significant initiatives is the construction of a 500-bedded hospital block at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Once completed, the new facility is expected to substantially enhance the institution's ability to accommodate patients, reduce overcrowding, and provide better medical care to people from Cachar, Hailakandi, Sribhumi, and neighbouring districts.
In another major step towards modernizing healthcare services, the government has announced that MRI facilities will be installed in all civil hospitals across Barak Valley. The addition of advanced diagnostic equipment is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized scans, ensuring quicker diagnosis and timely treatment.
The region is also poised to benefit from the establishment of the Sribhumi Medical College, a project expected to strengthen medical education while expanding healthcare services in the district. To support the institution, the government will also improve road connectivity leading to the medical college, making it more accessible for students, healthcare professionals, and patients.

Further strengthening the region's healthcare network, a new District Hospital is under construction at Lakhipur. The facility is expected to improve access to quality healthcare in rural and semi-urban areas while easing the patient burden on larger hospitals, particularly Silchar Medical College.
Officials described the initiatives as the beginning of a "new dawn of development" for Barak Valley's healthcare system. They noted that the projects reflect the government's commitment to delivering quality and affordable healthcare closer to people's homes.
Collectively, these investments are expected to bridge long-standing healthcare gaps, improve medical infrastructure, create new opportunities in medical education, and contribute significantly to the overall development and well-being of Barak Valley.
