Mahur, Aug 6, 2025: Representatives of several tribal student and community organisations in Assam's Dima Hasao district held a crucial preparatory meeting at the Mahur Inspection Bungalow (IB) on Wednesday to finalise arrangements for the upcoming Indigenous Peoples' Forum (IPF) programme and to strengthen a joint campaign demanding the establishment of key educational institutions in the region.
The meeting was attended by leaders of the Indigenous Student Forum (ISF) and Indigenous Women Forum (IWF), Mahur Branch, along with representatives of the Zeliangrong Students' Union (ZSU), Hmar Students' Association (HSA), and Kuki Students' Organisation (KSO). The organisations discussed strategies for mobilising public support and coordinating activities for the planned programme.
After detailed deliberations, the house unanimously resolved to organise a mass public gathering on August 19 to press the government for the immediate establishment of the long-pending Mahur Degree College and the proposed Tribal Medical College at Lasang. The organisations stated that both institutions are essential for addressing the educational and healthcare needs of tribal communities living in the region.
The participants recalled that the demands had previously received assurances during a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister of Assam on January 23, 2022. They expressed hope that the government would honour those commitments and expedite the implementation of the projects.

According to the organisers, the absence of a degree college in Mahur has compelled many students to travel long distances or discontinue higher education due to financial and logistical challenges. Similarly, they said the proposed Tribal Medical College at Lasang would significantly improve access to quality healthcare services while creating educational and employment opportunities for local youth.
The organisations emphasised that the planned mass gathering would be peaceful and democratic, aimed at drawing the attention of the government to the longstanding aspirations of the people of Dima Hasao.
Leaders appealed to students, civil society organisations, and members of all indigenous communities to participate in large numbers, stating that united public support would strengthen the movement for better educational infrastructure and healthcare facilities in the region.
