Imphal East, Aug 6, 2025: An awareness programme on Silkworm Rearing Technology was organised on August 5 at Andro Village, Nungkot in Imphal East district under the Mera Resham Mera Abhiman (MRMA) campaign, with the objective of promoting scientific sericulture practices and improving the socio-economic condition of silk farmers in Manipur.
The programme brought together government officials, scientists, local leaders, and sericulture farmers to discuss modern silkworm rearing techniques, sustainable farming methods, and technological interventions aimed at enhancing silk production and preventing crop losses.
The event was attended by Robertson Asem, Director of the Department of Sericulture, Government of Manipur, as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the importance of adopting scientific and improved rearing practices to increase productivity and ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers engaged in sericulture.
Robertson Asem noted that initiatives like the MRMA campaign are designed to strengthen the sericulture sector by providing farmers with updated technical knowledge, better management practices, and access to expert guidance. He encouraged farmers to embrace modern technologies and work collectively to improve the quality and quantity of silk production, thereby enhancing their incomes and contributing to the state's rural economy.
The programme was also attended by Kh. Pratima Devi, Assistant Director and District Sericulture Officer; Rabei Singh, Chairman of Andro Village; S. Subharani Devi, Scientist-D and Head of the Central Silk Board – Regional Sericultural Research Station (CSB-RSRS), Imphal; and Kh. Subadas Singh, Scientist-D.
During the technical sessions, experts shared practical knowledge on scientific silkworm rearing, disease management, prevention of crop failure, mulberry cultivation, and techniques to improve cocoon quality and overall productivity. Farmers were also informed about best practices for maintaining healthy silkworms, environmental management during rearing, and methods to minimise losses caused by pests and diseases.

The programme directly benefited 55 sericulture farmers from the region, who actively participated in the interactive sessions and sought guidance from experts on challenges faced in their day-to-day farming activities. The participants welcomed the initiative, stating that the knowledge gained would help them improve production and adopt more efficient farming techniques.
Officials said the awareness programme reflects the government's commitment to strengthening the sericulture sector through skill development, technology transfer, and capacity-building initiatives. By promoting scientific practices under the Mera Resham Mera Abhiman campaign, the Department of Sericulture aims to enhance rural livelihoods, generate sustainable employment opportunities, and contribute to the long-term growth of Manipur's silk industry.
