Aizawl, August 26, 2025: Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma on Tuesday held a high-level meeting with Pi Daily Giri, Chief General Manager of BSNL North East-1 Telecom Circle, to discuss measures aimed at strengthening telecommunications infrastructure and expanding digital services across the state.

The meeting, held at the Chief Minister’s office in Aizawl, focused on improving mobile network connectivity, enhancing digital access in remote areas, and creating better opportunities for students and job seekers through the establishment of additional online examination and skill development centres.

According to officials from the Chief Minister’s Office, one of the major outcomes of the discussion was BSNL’s commitment to install 53 new mobile towers in priority locations identified by the Mizoram Government. The proposed towers are expected to significantly improve mobile network coverage in underserved rural areas, border regions, and other locations where connectivity remains a challenge.

The state government assured BSNL of its support in facilitating the project, including the allocation of suitable land for tower installations. Officials noted that improved telecommunications infrastructure would help bridge the digital divide, strengthen communication networks, and support economic and social development across the state.

The meeting also reviewed plans to establish more online examination centres and skill training facilities in Mizoram. The initiative is intended to address the growing demand from students and job aspirants, many of whom currently travel to Aizawl or district headquarters to appear for online recruitment examinations, entrance tests, and certification programmes. Expanding such facilities is expected to make digital services more accessible and reduce the financial burden on candidates from remote areas.

Another important topic discussed was a proposal to construct Mizoram Houses in major Indian cities through a partnership model involving BSNL. The proposed facilities would provide accommodation and support services for students, professionals, and residents of Mizoram who travel outside the state for education, employment, or official purposes. The General Administration Department (GAD) will coordinate the framework and modalities for implementing the initiative.

The Chief Minister and the BSNL CGM also deliberated on the need to improve mobile network coverage along key highways and at railway stations. Reliable connectivity in these areas has become increasingly important with the expansion of transportation infrastructure and the growing movement of people and goods. BSNL assured the state government that efforts are underway to strengthen signal coverage and improve service quality at strategic locations.

Officials stated that the discussions formed part of the state government’s broader vision of promoting digital inclusion and ensuring that residents across Mizoram have access to reliable communication services. Improved connectivity is also expected to support education, healthcare, governance, tourism, and business activities throughout the state.

The meeting served as a follow-up to the consultation held in New Delhi on July 10 between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Pu A. Robert J. Ravi, during which similar issues were discussed and a joint statement was issued outlining areas of cooperation.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma was accompanied by Pu Sudir Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary (GAD), Pu L.P. Lalchangkima, Managing Director of ZIDCO, and Pi R. Lalrodingi, OSD to the Chief Minister.

The discussions concluded with a shared commitment to accelerating digital infrastructure development in Mizoram, improving connectivity in remote areas, and creating new opportunities for students, job seekers, and communities across the state.
