The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Modi, recently approved the construction of the ambitious hydropower project with an estimated investment of ₹8,146.21 crore. The project is expected to be completed within 72 months and will significantly strengthen Arunachal Pradesh’s role in India’s renewable energy sector.

With an installed capacity of 700 MW, comprising four units of 175 MW each, the Tato-II Hydroelectric Project is projected to generate approximately 2,738.06 million units (MU) of electricity annually. The generated power will not only help meet the growing energy demands of Arunachal Pradesh but also contribute to balancing and strengthening the national power grid.

The project will be implemented through a Joint Venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The Central Government will provide ₹458.79 crore for the construction of roads, bridges and associated transmission infrastructure. Additionally, ₹436.13 crore has been sanctioned as equity support for the state government.

Infrastructure improvements will include the construction of nearly 32.88 kilometres of roads and bridges, most of which will remain accessible for public use.

A further ₹20 crore from project funds will be utilised for community development initiatives, including hospitals, schools, markets, playgrounds and other essential public facilities. The project is also expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities while benefiting local suppliers, MSMEs and entrepreneurs.

Calling the approval a transformative step, Chief Minister Khandu said Arunachal Pradesh is poised to become a key driver of India’s power economy and contribute significantly to the nation’s vision of achieving Viksit Bharat 2047.
