The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, granted approval for the construction of the project, which is expected to be completed within 72 months. With an installed capacity of 700 MW (4 x 175 MW), Tato-II will generate 2,738.06 million units (MU) of electricity annually. The power will help strengthen supply in Arunachal Pradesh and support national grid balancing.

The project will be implemented through a Joint Venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The Centre will provide ₹458.79 crore for roads, bridges, and associated transmission lines, along with ₹436.13 crore as equity support for the state.

Arunachal Pradesh will receive 12% free power and 1% for the Local Area Development Fund (LADF), while also witnessing major infrastructure upgrades. Around 32.88 km of roads and bridges will be built, which will largely remain available for public use. Additionally, ₹20 crore from project funds will be used to construct essential facilities such as hospitals, schools, markets, and playgrounds.

The Tato-II project, aligned with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, will offer significant benefits to local suppliers, MSMEs, and enterprises, alongside generating direct and indirect employment. The local population will also gain from compensations, CSR activities, and socio-economic development initiatives.

Calling the decision “historic,” CM Khandu said, “In the coming days, Arunachal Pradesh will be a key driver of the power economy, propelling the nation’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.”
