Arunachal CM Pushes for Tailored Road, Air Connectivity Plans in NER Task Force Meet

Itanagar, August 6, 2025: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has strongly advocated for region-specific infrastructure policies and enhanced connectivity solutions to address the unique geographical challenges faced by the state. Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the High-Level Task Force on Logistics Cost, Infrastructure and Connectivity in the North Eastern Region, Khandu stressed that conventional development schemes often fail to adequately serve the realities of Arunachal Pradesh’s rugged terrain and scattered population.

The meeting, chaired by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, brought together key stakeholders from across the Northeast to discuss strategies for reducing logistics costs and improving infrastructure in the region. Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, participated in the discussions alongside representatives from Mizoram, Sikkim and other northeastern states.

During the meeting, Khandu pointed out that schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), while beneficial in many parts of the country, do not always cater effectively to remote villages in Arunachal Pradesh. He underscored the need for customised policies that take into account the state’s challenging topography and dispersed settlements. According to him, even the smallest habitations require reliable all-weather road connectivity, but roads alone cannot address all accessibility concerns.

Highlighting the importance of air connectivity, Khandu cited the success of the Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi, which has witnessed growing passenger traffic since its inauguration. He called for an increase in flight services and the inclusion of additional airline operators to meet rising demand. Improved air connectivity, he said, would significantly boost tourism, facilitate trade and enhance access to essential services.

The Chief Minister also urged the North Eastern Council (NEC) to transform itself from a funding agency into a strategic policy think tank capable of developing innovative and region-specific solutions. He emphasized that such an approach would help unlock the full development potential of the Northeast while addressing its diverse infrastructural needs.
