State-Level NMBA Committee Meeting Held in Kohima

Kohima, August 6, 2025: The State-Level Committee Meeting of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) in Nagaland was held on Wednesday at the office chamber of Limawabang Jamir, IAS, Secretary, Social Welfare Department, at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima. The meeting brought together key officials and stakeholders to review the progress of ongoing anti-drug initiatives and formulate strategies to strengthen the fight against substance abuse in the state.

The meeting was attended by Director of Social Welfare Toshili Zhimomi, committee members and representatives associated with the implementation of the NMBA programme. Participants reviewed the status of various activities being carried out under the nationwide campaign, which aims to create awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promote a drug-free society.

During the deliberations, the committee examined the effectiveness of ongoing awareness programmes, community outreach initiatives and rehabilitation efforts being undertaken across different districts of Nagaland. Discussions focused on identifying challenges, strengthening coordination among stakeholders and enhancing the impact of anti-drug campaigns at the grassroots level.

Addressing the meeting, Secretary Limawabang Jamir emphasized the need for a comprehensive and collaborative approach to tackle the growing threat of substance abuse. He stressed that government departments, educational institutions, civil society organizations, churches, youth groups and local communities must work together to address the issue effectively.

“Drug abuse is a social challenge that affects individuals, families and communities. Combating it requires collective action, sustained awareness and strong support systems for those affected,” he said.

Jamir reaffirmed the Social Welfare Department’s commitment to achieving the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, which seeks to reduce substance abuse through prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and community participation. He noted that creating awareness among young people remains a critical component of the campaign, given the increasing vulnerability of youth to drug-related issues.

The committee also discussed plans for upcoming awareness drives, capacity-building programmes and workshops aimed at equipping stakeholders with the skills and knowledge needed to address substance abuse challenges. Special emphasis was placed on strengthening rehabilitation services and ensuring better support for individuals recovering from addiction and their families.

Officials highlighted the importance of expanding outreach programmes to rural and remote areas, where access to information and support services may be limited. Participants also explored ways to improve collaboration with educational institutions and community-based organizations to create a stronger network of prevention and intervention mechanisms.

The meeting further reviewed strategies to encourage community participation in anti-drug initiatives and promote healthy lifestyles among young people. Members agreed that sustained public awareness and early intervention are essential for reducing the social and economic impact of drug abuse.

The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Government of India, has been actively implemented across the country with the objective of creating awareness, preventing substance abuse and supporting rehabilitation efforts. In Nagaland, the campaign has gained significance amid growing concerns over drug-related issues affecting communities in different parts of the state.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to intensify efforts towards building a drug-free Nagaland. Participants pledged to strengthen cooperation, expand awareness activities and enhance support systems to help individuals affected by substance abuse lead healthier and more productive lives.
