Arunachal Celebrates 25 Years of Gauhati High Court Itanagar Bench, Inaugurates New State-of-the-Art Building

Itanagar, Aug 12, 2025: Arunachal Pradesh marked a significant milestone on Tuesday as it celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Gauhati High Court’s Itanagar Permanent Bench, reaffirming the state’s commitment to ensuring accessible, transparent and effective justice for its citizens. The occasion was attended by Governor Lt. Gen. KT Parnaik (Retd.) as the Chief Guest, along with Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, Law and Justice Minister Kento Jini, Justices Kardak Ete and Budi Habung, Advocate General Indraneel Chowdhury, and several other dignitaries.

The silver jubilee celebration highlighted the remarkable progress made in strengthening the judicial system and expanding legal infrastructure across the state. Addressing the gathering, speakers underscored the importance of a robust judiciary in upholding the rule of law and ensuring public trust in democratic institutions.

On the occasion, the state government announced the creation of a corpus fund for the welfare of the Bar Association. It also assured the introduction of an Advocate Protection Bill aimed at safeguarding legal professionals and strengthening the legal fraternity in the state.

Officials noted that Arunachal Pradesh has witnessed substantial growth in its judicial infrastructure over the past decade. Since 2016, the number of courts in the state has increased from just two to 33 functional courts. Eight new courts have recently been established, while 463 new posts have been created in the district judiciary to improve efficiency and ensure timely disposal of cases. Several reforms have also been implemented to make justice more affordable, transparent and accessible to citizens.

A major highlight of the event was the inauguration of the new High Court building in Itanagar, a long-awaited project covering more than 19,000 square metres. Constructed at a cost of nearly ₹250 crore, the modern judicial complex was completed in less than four years despite delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation stone for the project was laid in 2018, and construction commenced in September 2021.

The inauguration was led by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai in the presence of Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, Supreme Court judges Ujjal Bhuyan, Sandeep Mehta, N. Kotiswar Singh and Vijay Bishnoi, as well as Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal.

The new facility is expected to significantly enhance judicial services in Arunachal Pradesh and stands as a symbol of the state’s continued efforts to strengthen the delivery of justice for future generations.
