Pakyong, August 12, 2025: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim, Justice Biswanath Somadder, jointly laid the foundation stone for the upcoming District Court Complex in Pakyong, marking a major milestone in strengthening the judicial infrastructure of the state.
The event was attended by Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan of the High Court of Sikkim; ministers Raju Basnet, Bhim Hang Limboo, and Puran Kumar Gurung; MLA Pamin Lepcha; senior judiciary members; officials from the Buildings and Housing Department; and representatives of the Bar Association of Sikkim.
In his address, the Chief Minister underlined the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for all, especially residents of remote areas, through infrastructure expansion and the recent creation of the Directorate of Prosecution. He highlighted ongoing reforms, including the introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which replace colonial-era criminal laws to modernise the justice system.
He also praised initiatives such as the establishment of the National Law University in Sikkim and the Nari Adalat programme, aimed at community-based, women-led justice forums in rural and semi-urban areas.
Chief Justice Somadder emphasised that accessible and well-equipped courts are vital for effective justice delivery and acknowledged the state government’s consistent support in developing essential judicial facilities.

According to the Buildings and Housing Department, the 2.27-hectare complex will include five structures - the main court building, an annexe block, bungalows for the District & Sessions Judge, Medical Magistrate, and Judicial Magistrate - designed to serve the needs of litigants, advocates, and the public.
Once completed, the Pakyong District Court Complex is expected to stand as a centre of justice, peace, and fairness, reinforcing public trust in the judiciary.
