Gangtok, August 11, 2025: In a landmark initiative aimed at recognising the invaluable contributions of mothers, the Government of Sikkim on Monday celebrated the first-ever Aama Samman Diwas across the state. The event marked a significant step towards honouring motherhood and strengthening support systems for women and families.
The celebration witnessed the participation of thousands of mothers from different districts, with the state government describing the occasion as a tribute to the love, sacrifices, resilience, and dedication of mothers who play a central role in nurturing families and communities.
As part of the programme, the government extended benefits under the Aama Sashaktikaran Yojana, a flagship initiative designed to empower mothers and improve their quality of life. More than 32,000 mothers across Sikkim received ₹20,000 each as financial assistance, providing direct support to households and enhancing economic security for women.
In addition to the financial assistance, beneficiaries were also provided with free LPG refills, a measure aimed at reducing household expenses and promoting cleaner cooking practices. Officials said the initiative would ease the daily burden on families while supporting the health and well-being of women.
Another key highlight of the celebration was the inauguration of Aama Suvidha Ghars, facilities created to ensure greater comfort, convenience, and care for mothers. The centres are intended to serve as dedicated spaces that support women’s welfare and provide essential amenities.
Government officials hailed the programme as a unique and meaningful initiative that places mothers at the centre of social welfare and development efforts. They noted that the scheme not only acknowledges the sacrifices made by mothers but also seeks to empower them through direct financial and social support.
Speaking on the significance of the occasion, officials said Aama Samman Diwas reflects the state government's commitment to women's empowerment, family welfare, and inclusive development. They emphasized that mothers are the foundation of society and deserve recognition for their contributions to shaping future generations.
The successful observance of the first Aama Samman Diwas was widely welcomed across the state, with beneficiaries expressing gratitude for the support and recognition. The initiative is expected to become an important annual event celebrating motherhood while advancing the welfare and empowerment of women in Sikkim.
