Tawang, July 31: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, all eight North Eastern states came together on a single platform for the North East State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights Convention 2026, held under the theme "Strengthening Child Rights Protection in North East India through Regional Cooperation and Collaborative Action."

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who took to social media platform X to share details of the event, underscored that the true measure of the convention's success lies not in dialogue but in tangible outcomes for vulnerable children across the region.
"Conferences do not protect children. Speeches do not protect children. Implementation does," Khandu stated, stressing that concrete action must follow the deliberations held at the convention.
The Chief Minister outlined clear benchmarks against which the convention's impact should be measured - the rescue of trafficked children, reunification of missing children with their families, retention of girls in school, and timely care and protection for children in vulnerable circumstances. Only when these outcomes are realised on the ground, he said, can the Tawang Convention be considered a genuine success.
The gathering marks a significant step toward regional cooperation on child protection issues in North East India, a region that faces distinct challenges including child trafficking, migration-related vulnerabilities, and gaps in institutional care systems across its diverse and often remote terrain.
By bringing together the State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights from all eight states - Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura - organisers hope to foster a coordinated, cross-border approach to safeguarding children, moving beyond isolated state-level efforts toward a unified regional strategy.
The convention is expected to pave the way for collaborative frameworks, information-sharing mechanisms, and joint action plans aimed at ensuring that policy commitments translate into measurable, on-ground protection for the region's children.
